Hickory, NC – August 26th marks the 86th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted women in the United States the right to vote. On August 25th, Women’s Resource Center and the League of Women Voters of Catawba County are celebrating the anniversary with an Open House and Voter Registration at the Women’s Resource Center, 125 3rd Street SW, Hickory. The event will be open to the public Friday, August 25th from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
Women and men are welcome to drop by the center to register to vote or to update their voter registration forms. People who are current on their voter registration cards are also invited to stop by the center’s Open House. WRC will also honor its Volunteers that day.
In 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day”. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
Women’s Resource Center has provided crisis assistance, life transitions services and enrichment programs since 1986.
